Festival returns to virtual format for 2022​

Thank you to all that made the 2022 Virtual Waterloo Wellington Children's Groundwater Festival a huge success!

Thousands of students joined to learn about water, not matter where they were. 

Each day of the Festival focuses on curriculum for a specific grade but is open to all grades to watch
May 16 - Grade 2 - Water in the environment (Watch here)
May 17 – Grade 3 – Soil, rocks and groundwater(Watch here)
May 18 – Grade 4 – Habitats and communities (Watch here)
May 19 – Grade 8 – Water systems (Watch here)

Each day features different lessons, music and interactive activities about varied topics such as watersheds, habitats for plants and animals, soil and rocks, water conservation and the importance of protecting natural resources.  

What your students will learn from each video:
Water in the environment
Content designed for grade 2 curriculum but open to all grades.
Approximately 1 hour in length
Learn about:
-How much water we have on Earth
-Water cycle and states of water
-Water attitudes in other countries
-Water conservation tips
-Where water goes when it rains
-Journey of water to your tap
-What happens after you flush your toilet

Soil, rocks and groundwater
Content designed for grade 3 curriculum but open to all grades.
Approximately 1 hour in length.
Learn about:
-How to identify rocks
-Relationship between rocks and water
-Groundwater; what it is and where you can find it
-Constructing a groundwater well
-Keeping groundwater clean

 

Habitats and communities
Content designed for grade 4 curriculum but open to all grades.
Approximately 1 hour in length.
Learn about:
-Watersheds
-Wetlands
-The Great Lakes
-Invasive species
-Helping species at risk 
-Turtles

Water systems
Content designed for grade 8 curriculum but open to all grades to attend.
Approximately 1 hour in length.
Learn about:
Dams
-The Great Lakes
-Groundwater wells
-Groundwater movement using a flow model
-Water treatment systems
-Distribution systems - using pressure and gravity to move water
-Minecraft wastewater treatment activity
-Why we sample and test water
-Water and energy conservation
-Water attitudes in other countries
-Urban planning to manage water use
